The Vulnerable Idea Phase

An artistic project develops like a baby.

When a baby is first born, it is delicate. The skull of a baby is fragile, and can be molded or melded. The baby is very vulnerable to outside impacts.

This is the way I view an idea in its first stages in development. When an idea is born, it has yet to take a solid form. The parent must be very careful to watch and take care of it.

When outside people try to get involved with a project in the idea phase, it often has detrimental results. Before the idea can be developed, it is often smacked down. The baby is knocked to the floor, its skull crushed, blood oozing out of what could have been an amazing creation.

Personally, when I develop my ideas, I cannot have people around me. That, or I have to be completely unaware of the people around me, so I do not feel self-conscious. There are so many reasons to doubt an idea. It is easier to find problems than to find solutions.

When outside people get involved in the idea development process, they often behave poorly. Sometimes, they shoot down an idea, thinking that it is not possible. Other times, they shoot down an idea thinking that is isn't worthwhile. Perhaps it's not original enough, or perhaps it's too ambitious.

Another issue with people getting involved in the vulnerable idea phase is that it's difficult to explain the complexities of a brainstorming mind. The human mind is making connections constantly. When an idea is first developed, it morphs into many different forms at a quicker rate than can be explained in words. This makes communication very difficult. Often, when an idea is ineffectively communicated, it is immediately denounced.

In order to avoid the pressures of approval for an idea, it must be developed in secret. It has to be kept under blankets until it is strong enough to fight for its right to survive.
