I Got All These Blogs

The past two days, I've been experimenting with different websites to share my writing on, partially to figure out the best way to share my writing, mostly because I find working with websites very fun.

Each blogging website has its benefits and shortcomings, and at this point, I'm still not 100% sure what I want to choose. So I'm going to do some pros and cons.

Blogger

I've been making a number of changes to my STAC Blog to make it more organized and coherent. I organized posts on top by category and put pages on the side along with an archive. I definitely plan on keeping my STAC blog here, but I'm reluctant to put my writing blog here.

Pros
  • I have a lot of experience
  • Good text editing
  • Relatively easy to format
Cons
  • Generally ugly looking
  • Not much community

Wordpress
(Check out the blog under construction here)

Of course, Wordpress is the next obvious choice. I thought I'd try it out. However, I'm not entirely sold on it either.

Pros
  • Good text editor
  • Community (people can find posts through tags like tumblr)
Cons
  • Layout choices are quite limited, especially if you don't pay for a premium account
  • While formatting is easy to do, it is often cumbersome
  • Only archives by month, not by specific posts (Post archives seem to be available only in Wordpress.org)

Tumblr
(Check out the website under construction here)

I never intended to use Tumblr as my main spot because it's predominantly meant for short quotes and pictures. On the other hand, I figured it could be a good place to post excerpts of my writing. If I gave them a lot of miscellaneous tags, people may find them and look at my main blog. Or, they may enjoy the excerpts themselves.

Pros
  • Community
Cons
  • Not ideal for substantial writing

Squarespace
(Check out the blog under construction here)

My friend introduced Squarespace to me, and I must say, the website is GORGEOUS. On the other hand, I wonder if it's better for building websites for business, as opposed to websites focused around writing.

Pros
  • VERY easy to edit (All you have to do is click on the page to create boxes, edit fonts, whatever)
  • Looks awesome
  • Easy to integrate selling products (in case I release an eBook one day, you never know)
Cons
  • The text editor is a bit poor, which for a writing blog is definitely something to consider
  • No community; I would have to share the webpage myself
  • Costs $10 a month (I'm currently using the trial)
  • Only archives by month, not by specific posts

Summary
While Squarespace is a gorgeous website, Wordpress seems like it's better for just writing, which is my main item of content. Also, a Wordpress.org website gives me the power to change whatever I want.
